EAN barcodes for Shopify

Shopify is one of the most widely used e-commerce platforms in the world. Although you can sell without barcodes, adding an EAN/GTIN to each product opens the door to more sales channels and improves your ranking. Here's how.

Where do you add EAN codes in Shopify?

Shopify includes a specific barcode field for each product variant. You'll find it under Products → (your product) → Variants → Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN…). There you enter your EAN-13 number. If the product has variants (sizes, colours), remember that each variant needs its own unique EAN.

Why add the EAN to your Shopify products?

  • Google Shopping and the Google channel: the GTIN is practically mandatory for your products to appear in Shopping ads and Google's free listings. Without it, many campaigns are limited.
  • Sales channels: when you connect Shopify with Amazon, Facebook/Instagram Shopping or marketplaces, the EAN lets you match your offer to the channel's catalogue.
  • Inventory management: it makes it easy to use barcode scanners in the warehouse and point of sale (Shopify POS).

Do I need a different EAN per product?

Yes. Each product and each variant must have a unique code. Reusing the same EAN across different products causes matching errors on Google and on marketplaces.
