What are EAN barcodes?
The European Article Number (EAN) is a thirteen-digit (13) barcode system used to identify consumer products. It stores a specific amount of information that can be read at high speed by a laser scanner, streamlining many business processes.
How many types of barcodes are there?
There are several: the EAN code (also known as EAN13), the UPC, and the GTIN or GTIN13 (Global Trade Identifier). EAN codes are now a standard adopted by many countries. The United States and Canada still use the UPC code.
How does the EAN barcode work?
The EAN (EAN13) is made up of 13 digits, while the UPC used in the US has 12. The EAN is structured as 1-6-6: one country-of-origin digit, two groups of six digits (manufacturer number and product number) and a check digit. There is a short 8-digit version (EAN-8) for small products.
How many barcodes do I need for each product?
Each product must be assigned a different barcode: every code issued is unique to the product, to avoid errors or confusion at purchase and problems in its distribution.
How is the EAN barcode registered?
To obtain the EAN code you don't need information about the product or the company, since the distributor (Amazon, supermarkets, iTunes, etc.) can link the information and price to the code you provide.
Do I need a tax or social security number to manage the code?
No. You don't need to provide any such document to process your barcode.

What steps follow after placing the order?

In what format will you receive the EAN or UPC codes?
In JPEG (the most common, high quality), EPS (vector, ideal for resizing and widely used by designers) and TIFF (useful if you need a transparent background).
If my company is outside the US, can I request an EAN code?
Yes. You can request an EAN barcode to sell and distribute your products. If your business is in the US and/or Canada, you can also request it, but in that case the UPC is issued.
What is the UPC barcode?
Unlike the EAN (13 digits), the UPC is a unique 12-digit number, also scanner-readable. They're known as GTIN-12 and appear as lines of varying widths representing the series of numbers shown beneath the bars.
